How to unblock a toilet

Safe first steps for a blocked toilet, what not to do, and when to call a drain engineer.

First response

If the bowl is close to overflowing, do not flush again. Wait for the level to drop if it will, then attempt a flange plunger designed for toilets — not a flat cup sink plunger.

  1. Create a seal over the outlet with the plunger and use firm thrusts.
  2. If you must remove water to work safely, use a disposable container and bag waste carefully.
  3. Never push towels or bulky tools into the trap.
  4. Once clear, flush once and watch the water level and any nearby gullies for backing up.

Safety notes

  • Wear gloves and eye protection.
  • Chemical “bombs” can splash and damage porcelain glaze or seals.
  • Macerator (Saniflo-type) toilets need different diagnosis — do not treat them like gravity pans.

When to call a professional

If plunging fails, the toilet is full of solid obstruction you cannot retrieve safely, or other fittings gurgle, book blocked toilet clearance. Recurring blockages or pump alarms may need macerator and Saniflo attention. Also see toilet not flushing for cistern faults that are not true blockages. Prioritised help: 01332 314146.
