Burst pipe repair
Pipes burst when ice expands, joints fail, or corrosion finally opens a pinhole into a split. Copper, plastic push-fit and older iron all fail differently, but the immediate risk is the same: rapid water damage to ceilings, electrics and belongings.
Common causes
Frozen loft and garage pipes, water hammer on loose clips, aged stopcock spindles that snap when forced, and washing-machine hose bursts are frequent call-outs. Central heating pipes can also fail on sealed systems that repeatedly lose pressure.
On the visit
The engineer isolates the supply, drains the affected run as needed, cuts out damaged sections, and replaces them with appropriate fittings. Where a temporary make-safe is required overnight, that is agreed with you first. Permanent repairs are pressure-tested before the visit closes.
Emergency plumbing is prioritised when water is escaping or the home is without essential sanitary facilities. Call Super Plumbers Derby on 01332 314146. We schedule the soonest suitable engineer rather than claiming unverified blanket overnight cover.
When to call
Call as soon as you cannot control the flow with the stopcock, or if a ceiling is bowing with water. Related pages: emergency plumber, pipe repair, leak detection. Guide: frozen pipes.
Materials we commonly use
Repairs may use copper with soldered or compression fittings, or approved plastic systems where they match the existing run. Mixing incompatible plastics without the right transition fittings causes repeat failures — we choose joints that suit the pipe already in the wall or floor.
Insurance and documentation
If you are claiming, ask the engineer for a brief description of cause and repair on the paperwork. We do not invent causes for claims; we report what the evidence shows. Temporary caps and isolations are labelled so nobody reopens a dead leg by mistake.
Preventing the next burst
After a freeze-related failure we may recommend insulation, loft hatch draught-proofing or moving pipe routes away from eaves. After corrosion failures we look at water quality and whether neighbouring sections should be planned for replacement rather than patched indefinitely.
