What to do when a pipe bursts

Immediate steps to limit damage from a burst pipe, then how to get professional repair.

Do this first

  1. Open the stopcock path and shut off the water supply.
  2. Open taps to drain remaining water from the pipe run if it is safe to do so.
  3. Switch off heating and isolate electricity if water is near fittings — only if you can reach the consumer unit safely without stepping in water.
  4. Contain water with towels and move belongings; photograph damage for insurers.
  5. Call for urgent plumbing help.

What not to do

Do not leave a small “jet” running overnight hoping it slows. Do not use electrical heaters to dry voids while water is still live in the structure. Do not attempt solder repairs on pipes you have not fully isolated and drained.

Safety notes

  • Burst pipes can flood ceilings quickly — evacuate rooms at risk of collapse if plaster is saturated.
  • Assume water may be contaminated if foul drains are involved.
  • Gas pipe damage is a different emergency — smell of gas means National Gas Emergency 0800 111 999.
