Stopcock replacement
A working internal stopcock is the most important safety device in domestic plumbing. Seized valves leave you unable to isolate leaks and turn small faults into major damage.
Why they fail
Years without operation seize gate washers; forced handles snap spindles; old mains valves leak at the stuffing gland when disturbed. Some homes still rely on a single poor-quality valve with no serviceable alternative.
Visit details
We assess whether an inline replacement, a new full-bore lever valve, or additional service valves on branches is the right upgrade. Water is coordinated with you — brief interruption is normal. After fitting we confirm shut-off performance and label the valve position.
If a leak is active and the stopcock will not turn, call 01332 314146 for prioritised help. Guide: how to find and turn off your stopcock. Related: pipe repair, emergency plumber, water leak repair.
Full-bore benefits
Lever ball valves shut quickly and rarely seize like old gate valves. Full-bore designs keep flow higher for combi boilers and showers. We usually recommend them for primary isolation upgrades.
Secondary valves
Adding valves under sinks and for WCs reduces how much of the house you shut off for a washer change. Mention if you want that scoped while the main is already open.
Flats and meters
Some flats share meter cupboards. We coordinate so neighbours are warned about brief interruptions when the common section must be closed.
